Sydney-based, classically-trained electronic music producer Royalston returns to Med School with his unique brand of glitchy tech drum+bass.
Previous Med School outings including ÒThe TestÓ (New Blood 010) and ÒGlitchbitchÓ (More Blood 010) brought Royalston into the spotlight, and his music has found favour with the likes of dBridge, Loxy, Fresh, Marky, Rob Da Bank, TC, Matrix, John B, Lynx, Blokhe4d and London Elektricity. Renowned for his idiosyncratic but ever on-point style, RoyalstonÕs eclectic and experimental sound has set him apart from the crowd and this release is no exception.
Title track ÒCerulean BlueÓ sets the tone for the EP with tense, trembling synth tones, stern, smacking drums and a sense of foreboding from the off with groaning bass sweeps and intricate rhythms. Next up, ÒBonesingerÓÔs beautifully enunciated beats, hissing SFX and thunderous bassline continue to weave the musical magic.
ÒMantequaÓ, the third original track on the EP, is a tougher incarnation, with mounting tension built by bass stabs, thumping kick drums and quirky, tribal rhythms. Completing the package is the brilliant Royalston remix of ÒJapanese BonesÓ by experimental Australian pop duo MA, a bold testament to his abilities as a remixer. Royalston twists the polished vocal around shuddering bass and one of the craziest drum+bass time signatures youÕre likely to hear, transforming the original into a new form that is unmistakeably his.
